چکیده

SUMMARY Multivariate normal or Student importance sampling is a commonly used technique for integration problems in statistical inference. This integration approach is easy to implement, has straightforward error estimates and is eeective in a number of problems. A variety of variance reduction techniques can be considered with importance sampling. Stratiied sampling is one of these and in fact, is about the only guaranteed variance reducer. We consider the implemen-taion of stratiied sampling in the context of spherically symmetric importance samplers.

Curse-of-dimensionality revisited: Collapse of importance sampling in very large scale systems

It has been widely realized that Monte Carlo methods (approximation via a sample ensemble) may fail in large scale systems. This work offers some theoretical insight into this phenomenon. In the context of a particle filter (as well as in general importance samplers), we demonstrate that the maximum of the weights associated with the sample ensemble members converges to one as both sample size ...

Spherically Symmetric Solutions in a New Braneworld Massive Gravity Theory

In this paper, a combination of the braneworld scenario and covariant de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive Gravity theory is proposed. In this setup, the five-dimensional bulk graviton is considered to be massive. The five dimensional nonlinear ghost-free massive gravity theory affects the 3-brane dynamics and the gravitational potential on the brane. Following the solutions with spherical s...

Measuring the non-asymptotic convergence of sequential Monte Carlo samplers using probabilistic programming

A key limitation of sampling algorithms for approximate inference is that it is difficult to quantify their approximation error. Widely used sampling schemes, such as sequential importance sampling with resampling and MetropolisHastings, produce output samples drawn from a distribution that may be far from the target posterior distribution. This paper shows how to upper-bound the symmetric KL d...

The Importance of Neutrino Opacities for the Accre- tion Luminosity in Spherically Symmetric Supernova Models

Spherically symmetric simulations of stellar core collapse and postbounce evolution do not lead to explosions if they are based on " standard " [1, 10] nuclear and weak interaction micro-physics. This widely anticipated statement achieved a completely new level of justification with the technically complete and self-consistent treatment of neutrino transport in the highly dynamical evolution af...

Stratified Median Ranked Set Sampling: Optimum and Proportional Allocations

In this paper, for the Stratified Median Ranked Set Sampling (SMRSS), proposed by Ibrahim et al. (2010), we examine the proportional and optimum sample allocations that are two well-known methods for sample allocation in stratified sampling. We show that the variances of the mean estimators of a symmetric population in SMRSS using optimum and proportional allocations to strata are smaller than ...
